Fortunately, I didn’t have to sculpt alone.  Since the Elephant was large I found a secluded spot near my then-home in Atlanta, TX for photographs, and I invited three good friends to join me for the adventure.  The creek we found was peaceful and perfect for our Elephant watering hole.  I will never forget carrying the giant balloon elephant down the road and through the woods searching for the best possible shot.  When the day was over, I temporarily deflated the giant elephant center so I could deliver the elephant to one of my students who had oral surgery the day before.  When I asked if I could do anything for her, she made the mistake of jokingly telling me she wanted a giant balloon elephant.  Giant balloon elephant?  No problem.

When we woke up Saturday morning, it was NASTY outside. I suppose the weather would not have felt so terrible if I had not needed to photograph balloons.  I did though!  We all stayed positive, but it looked like our six hour drive might be wasted. To stall for better weather, we drove halfway up the mountain and visited underground Ruby Falls. It wasn’t raining down there, but it sure was when we got back to the surface. Arriving at the Rock City on the top of lookout mountain, we were saddened to find it was even more icky than it had been when we left the falls. We stalled for an hour at Starbucks and then, with no choice but to try, we went into the park and got the best photos we could.  It wasn’t raining, but it was windy and the view was a foggy mess. The trip was wasted.

Correction, the trip seemed wasted. We got a nice picture of a dog in the rainbow on our way out, which I feared might be the best shot we had to show for the adventure. We kept the giant rainbow, and I was determined to drive back with the giant sculpture crammed in the back of my car—looking for good photo opportunities along the way. The first few hours of our travel were no better than Friday, but I kept watching for a nice view and a clear sky with a hopeless optimism. I considered the lighthouse in Pensacola and wondered if it would be worthwhile to carry an awkward balloon sculpture around seemingly countless winding stairs to get a photo from one of the few high points in Pensacola. Gratefully, Alabama offered me a better opportunity. Did you know Alabama has some beautiful parks?  When we passed Oak Mountain State Park, we decided to give it a try. The kind woman at the gate suggested where we might find a good vista in the park and we headed up to the summit. Sure enough, we found a beautiful view!  The picture is not quite what I had dreamed of in Chattanooga, but that is part of the adventure of The Inflated Story of Noah. These are not the same sculptures someone might be able to make in a perfectly climate controlled room and with a green screen. These sculptures represent adventures around the globe!

One of my favorite rainbow shots has little to do with the rainbow itself. While traveling through Israel, our tour group had the opportunity to stand high on Mt. Carmel, overlooking the valley of Megiddo. You may not recognize that name right off, but this valley is the place of “Armageddon,” mentioned in Revelation 16:16. I love that the rainbow over Megiddo shows this reminder of hope and restoration in the same scene with a valley we usually connect with destruction.

It might be obvious to you while looking at The Inflated Story of Noah that I made more than one rainbow. To be honest, my failures with the rainbow are a great reminder to me of the grace God has shown humanity. I set out from the beginning of this project to avoid photoshopping any pictures.  You won’t find any photos artificially inserted into a location. You will find cropping, imaginative angles,  basic adjustments to color that might be done on any photograph, and things like strings removed to help pages look more natural. There is a glaring exception that I am embarrassed to admit. When I first attempted to create the entire story of Noah in a few brief days in 2002, I somehow mixed up the order in my Roy G. Biv.

When I made other rainbows and arks, I did not use my brain—I used the old picture to arrange my colors. Even in Israel in 2011, I copied old rainbows without using my brain. It is astounding how many people simply overlook the colors of the rainbow. Through years of people looking at the rainbows and the ensuing pictures, and I can only recall one person who mentioned the colors. Unfortunately, I didn’t quite compute what she was saying. My heart sank when I realized my seemingly irrecoverable mistake. It took years of looking at dysfunctional rainbow images before I admitted my anti-photo shopping policy needed a few exceptions. After all, I could not just throw away a rainbow photo taken from the top of Masada in Israel. I earned too many weird looks carrying it up on the tram! I assumed it would cost a fortune to adjustment the photo, but with time, patience, and the right programs, I learned how to do it myself, even with my limited skills. When you see the partial rainbows in the book, I hope you, like me, will be reminded of God’s grace in the midst of our mistakes.

Knowing I had nearly made enough animals for this Inflated Story, I set out in fall 2015 to make a final sculpting push. Even though more international trips were unlikely, I wanted to make the final sculptures special. Fortunately, the United States of America is an incredibly diverse place, and the Everglades beckoned from the southern side of Florida. But who would I make such a crazy balloon sculpting journey with? Fortunately, I have three homeschooled nephews who were up to the task and able to take the days off. With a car full of balloons and a cooler to fill with ham and cheese, we hit the southbound highway.

Our travel weather was beautiful until we were very close to our southern Florida base camp, a Best Western in Homestead, FL. Then it got ugly. A radar map of the entire country showed rain on the west coast with otherwise sunny weather across the central, northern, and southern United States—with one exception, the southern tip of Florida. My vague and likely inflated (no pun intended) aspirations to photograph balloon fish while snorkeling in the keys were dashed by the foul weather which made our Friday a scouting day. First, we checked out the Everglades—I’ve never been so fond of 25% deet mosquito repellent. On our way out of the park, I saw a sign for “Everglades Alligator Farm”. I hadn’t mapped it yet, but I was almost certain this was the alligator farm I had been checking out on the internet. This was one of the more fortuitous moments in making the book because it allowed me to meet some folks at Everglades Animal farm in person before I showed up with balloons trying to take photographs. They had agreed to have a handler meet us first thing Saturday morning.

That night I set to sculpting at the hotel. Alligator one was the largest alligator and took around two hours to complete. I sculpted in the hotel room while my three nephews watched and chilled on the internet. When it was time for them to get some rest, I made sure they were secure and headed to the lobby for alligators two and three. The second gator I began was the one I see as the mother. She was tricky to twist because I felt unsure how the two-tone weave might turn out. In frustration, I set her aside while I sculpted the baby alligator with his mouth open and ready to bite—though in my imagination the little one is just feeling chipper. Not surprisingly, I made a few new friends and balloon book fans while sculpting in the lobby. Finally, exhausted but satisfied, I was able to tidy up, clean up, and get some rest.

Saturday morning, I set my action cam rolling as we traveled toward the Alligator farm. Eventually, you will get the see my balloonumentary of the process. When we arrived at the Animal farm, the two handlers, Will and Luke, were absolutely amazing. I hoped to get a decent shot with alligators in the distance. They walked into the alligator holding pond with me, lured startled alligators back to shore, and allowed me to get pictures within feet of the giant reptiles. Needless to say, I was a big nervous—but these guys clearly knew what they were going. Will even coaxed an alligator that must have been 14 feet to raise up with his jaw dropped for some pictures.

After we finished in the main pond, they took me over to the baby gator holding pond for pictures with the little ones. Once again, I was allowed to climb into the holding area. Luke was actually walking around in the water barefoot to keep the little ones in control! One of my favorite moments of the day was when a curious gator toddler walked right up to the balloon gator and gave it a nip. Fortunately, the balloon did not pop and the alligator was not harmed. It made for a great picture!

I will always be grateful to the Everglades Animal Farm for the kindness they showed me, my project, and my nephews. My youngest nephew Andrew had his birthday that day, while we were traveling, and I was a bit worried about him having to celebrate away from his parents. Thanks to the folks at Everglades Animal Farm, I think it was his most memorable birthday ever. Luke caught us just before we left and asked if we had time for a treat for my young nephew’s birthday. He took us back to a new exhibit that was not opening until later in the day and let my nephews feed alligators! Apparently, the only other outsider they had ever let feed the adult alligators was Shaquille O’Neal.

With the alligator farm behind us, I wanted to be sure we had a few pictures that were actually inside the Everglades. We took the alligators on into the park, first getting a few fun shots at the edge of the Anhinga trail before driving a big further west and getting a few shots with the miles of sawgrass. Finally, having dodged more mosquito bites than we took, we loaded the alligators into the car and called it a day. Mission Complete.

Of course, you can’t travel across the state of Florida with a crew of 11-16-year-old boys without stopping for a few bonus adventures. Along the way we saw the Kennedy Space Center (you’ve got to see the Atlantis exhibit!), drove into the Keys (despite the icky weather), wandered through Wonderworks in Orlando, and swam with manatee. By far, though, our experience photographing alligators at Everglades Alligator Farm was the highlight. I look forward to the day you see the final product in The Inflated Story of Noah.

Did you know a volcano can be invisible from 18.6 miles away? The haze at that distance can make it disappear.  Even worse, the atmosphere around an active volcano can make it awfully popular with the clouds. That is to say, I was excited about photographing balloon monkeys in Ecuador, but by the third day of driving around with balloon monkeys I was beginning to get worried. The 18.6 miles to Tungurahua seemed further every day.

I photographed the balloon monkeys during a mission trip to Camp Chacauco in Patate, Ecuador in 2008. It was one of several trips I took to Ecuador with older youth from First Baptist Church of Atlanta, TX. If you have been on a mission trip, you will appreciate the grueling schedule and the need to prioritize the work we came for over photographing balloon sculptures. Nevertheless, by the end of the first full day, I had managed to create monkey one and after a day or two lamenting the hidden volcano I added a second monkey.

Through the week our team left camp each day to travel to a ministry site 20 minutes further along the valley.  Each day we passed a house with a pet monkey. You guessed it!  I asked our native translator about the monkey and was able to get balloon photos with it.  It’s a little known fact that monkeys are afraid of balloon monkeys. At least, this one was.  He liked people, but when the balloon came near the tree, the monkey quickly climbed away. For what it’s worth, the monkey posed more easily than the eagle did. Still though, great shots of the volcano were elusive.

Only one book sculpture was impromptu. During a few hours of afternoon free time in Ecuador I considered, “What else could I make that fits in Ecuador for the book?”  That’s when I went through my balloons and made a last-minute Toucan. With a group of FBC youth in tow, we hiked to the opposite side of camp from the volcano and went to work photographing the toucan. Gratefully the clouds were not an issue when a Volcano was not needed.

Only on our last full day at the camp did God finally part the clouds. The scattering began while we were on our ministry site playing with children from an Ecuadorian school and later painting. The photos were tricky to take over the edge of the school fence, but with the help of the students, we got started photographing. They were not great shots.

During our final afternoon free time, we kept an eye out for changes, and that’s when we were really blessed. Finally, the clouds cleared!  With our fresh view of the volcano I grabbed a few friends and made our way to a tree on the edge of camp facing the volcano. I knew we had a good chance to capture the gorgeous valley, the flowing river, and the billowing volcano, but it was a delightful surprise when a hint of a rainbow formed in front of the volcano. Even though it was one of the first pictures I posed for the book, I still consider the shot of balloon monkeys in a tree with a river flowing through a beautiful valley and an active volcano with a rainbow in front of it one of my favorites.
